Enforced Long-Range Order in 1D Wires by Coupling to Higher Dimensions

چکیده

One-dimensional wires are known to be inherently unstable at finite temperature. Here, we show that long-range order of atomic Au double chains adsorbed on a Si(553) surface is not only stabilized by interaction with the substrate, but spontaneous self-healing structural defects actually enforced adsorption species such as or H. This true even for random adsorbate distribution. Combining atomistic models within density functional theory low energy electron diffraction and high-resolution loss spectroscopy, demonstrate this apparently counterintuitive behavior mainly caused adsorption-induced band filling modified bands, i.e., strong electronic correlation throughout whole terrace. Although preferably occurs step edge, it enhances dimerization stiffness dimers. Thus, intertwinement quasi-1D properties delocalized 2D effects enforces wire order.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR FIRST-ORDER PHASE TRANSITION IN 1d POTTS MODEL WITH LONG-RANGE INTERACTIONS

The first-order phase transition in the one-dimensional q-state Potts model with long-range interactions decaying with distance as 1 r1 σ, has been studied by Monte Carlo numerical simulations for 0 σ 1 and integer values of q 2. On the basis of the finite-size scaling analysis of interface free energy ∆FL, specific heat and Binder’s fourth order cumulant, we obtain the first-order transition w...

Gravitational coupling constant in higher dimensions

Assuming the equivalence of FRW-cosmological models and their Newtonian counterparts, we propose using the Gauss law in arbitrary dimension a general relation between the Newtonian gravitational constant G and the gravitational coupling constant κ.

Long-Range Beam–Beam Compensation Using Wires

At the LHC, the effect of unavoidable long-range beam–beam collisions reduces the dynamic aperture, calling for a minimum crossing angle. A wire compensator partially cancels the effect of the long-range collisions, and may allow operation with reduced crossing angle or decreased beta function at the interaction point, thereby increasing the (virtual) peak luminosity. In this chapter, we descri...

Discrete maximum principle for higher-order finite elements in 1D

We formulate a sufficient condition on the mesh under which we prove the discrete maximum principle (DMP) for the one-dimensional Poisson equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions discretized by the hp-FEM. The DMP holds if a relative length of every element K in the mesh is bounded by a value H∗ rel(p) ∈ [0.9, 1], where p ≥ 1 is the polynomial degree of the element K. The values H∗ rel(p) ar...

Detecting Majoranas in 1D wires by charge sensing

The electron number-parity of the ground state of a semiconductor narowire proximity-coupled to a bulk superconductor can alternate between the quantised values ±1 if parameters such as the wire length L, the chemical potential μ or the magnetic field B are varied inside the topological superconductor phase. The parity jumps, which may be interpreted as changes in the occupancy of the fermion s...
